Pious, disciplined & learned in the Dhamma, the Most Venerable Thambugala Anandasiri Thero is one of the foremost monks in the Buddhist Order.
Having retired to the Kutumbigala Sacred Grove alone in 1954,he conquered all trials & tribulations with firm determination, & in 1960,transformed the Sacred Grove, which was by then in a ruined state, into a fitting abode for monks to mediate by renovating its rock caves. In that vast forest range running to thousands of acres where elephants, leopards, bears & other wild animals roam,he steadfastly travelled the path of the Dhamma.
In the mid-eighties when trouble broke out in the eastern province he left a few pupil monks in the Sacred Grove, & migrated with a majority of monks to a forest range by a village near Moneragala some 60 miles of Kutumbigala, where lived Sinhala Buddhists. He did so with the concurrence & blessing of his benefactors, but he was assassinated by some unknown gunmen who were insensitive to his holy life.
A crusader against Sinhala Buddhists’ ostentatious expenditure on funerals, & their aversion to performing funeral rites on Tuesdays & Fridays, he was quite ironically killed on Tuesday the 3rd October 1989 & was cremated on 6th Friday at the Borella Cemetery in Colombo.
