About the Book
In the mid-twentieth century, the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya (now University of Peradeniya) was the center of Sri Lanka’s intellectual and cultural life. Peradeniya’s sheer physical beauty provided a background to an atmosphere of endeavor, of expectancy, of optimism, glamour and romance. This book is placed in that setting. Nina, a young woman from rural Sri Lanka struggles to acquire knowledge and gain acceptance. As the story progresses, the reader is treated to a view of undergraduate life of the time in all its varieties. Amidst various obstacles, Nina finds friends and discovers romance. Her eventual success is not without cost. Readers will be enthralled by the vivid descriptions of places and beguiled by characters that seem vaguely familiar.
