Dhyan Abeyagoonasekera was a tea plantation manager in Sri Lanka before he turned to the print media. It was as a journalist associated with four English national newspapers in the country he recognised the many deficiencies that prevailed among Buddhists themselves in understanding the Dhamma and their departure along wrong paths in the misguided belief they were also part of what the Buddha taught. It was then he realised that there was a need for a simply written guide embodying the basic concepts of Buddhism for the information of the under-educated and misguided Buddhists.

‘Welcome to Buddhism’ was written not only as an attempt to satisfy that need but also for the benefit of ‘thinking people’ who wished to learn about this great philosophy. He also decided to write the book in English the language of the world to enable people living elsewhere, especially in the Western hemisphere where the interest in Buddhism is growing rapidly.
