“While engaged on a bibliography of medical research on Sri Lanka I came across a wealth of untouched historical information, available in the local medical journals, which dealt with the development of the medical profession in Sri Lanka. The idea of writing up a social and historical study of the medical profession came to me then.

“This study deals exclusively with the Sri Lankan practitioner of western medicine. It should be noted that this is essentially a study relating to the sociology of work and occupations, with a bias towards social stratification.”

Kamalika Pieris studied Sociology at the University of Ceylon, and also obtained the Postgraduate Diploma in Librarianship from the University of London. She has held positions as a librarian in the Sri Lanka National Library Service Board, National Institute of Business Management, and the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine. She is presently librarian of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects. Her publications include Bibliography of medical publications relating to Sri Lanka 1811-1976 and Bibliography on health in Sri Lanka 1977-1980.
