To quote from Dr. Norman Simm’s Study: “Three strands in a literary corpus”

With her three nationalities – German, British, and Sri Lankan – Anne Ranasinghe writes English poems, short stories, essays, and radio play out of her past experience in Germany as a Jew and her present life in Sri Lanka as a mother and wife. Her writing is not merely descriptive and expressive; she does not simply put into words her perceptions and her feelings, but in a dialectic manner she interprets, creating and deconstructing at the same time, seeking the truth within the images she perceives and imagines, testing them on the relationship she has to them, and making her poetry, as well as her short stories, out of the problematic of history, memory, and moral responsibility to act. Increasingly obsessed with the question of remembering – because she knows what it means for the Germans to forget; because it is through remembering that she creatively interprets her presence in Sri Lanka – she is very much a Jewish writer, but a Jewish writer of Sri Lanka. In recognition of that fact, she was awarded in September 2007 the “State Literary Award” for her Immense Contribution to the field of Sri Lankan Literature, the highest honor of Sahithyaratna (Gem of Literature)
