The term, Nikaya has been used instead of schism which refers to the monastic Buddhism after the initial schism of the Buddhist dispensation into the Mahasangika and Sthaviravāda. Dissension of the Sasana that led to the origin of various schools was not an immediate occurrence. The roots for the division of the Sasana started during the lifetime of the Buddha and it was gradually developed up to 18 sects by the Third Buddhist Council.
“Phases of Buddhist Tradition” which covers the historical evolution of Buddhist traditions, paying special attention to the significant landmarks in the history of Buddhism from the Buddha’s period up to the Anuradhapura period in Sri Lanka is the latest book of Ven. Dr. Panahaduwe Yasassi Thero.
