Having completed his education at Hena Road junior school, Mt. Lavinia and Nalanda College, Colombo. Gaminie joined the Department of Wildlife Conservation of Sri Lanka in 1981. Since then he gained firsthand experience as a Wildlife Reserves in Sri Lanka. Including Yala and Wilpattu. Presently he is posted at the National Wildlife Research and Training Centre of Sri Lanka, as the Officer in Charge.
In this book, first published in Sinhala language in the year 2000, he relates his memorable experiences as a wildlife officer, focusing on the time spent at Yala – East National Park (presently Kumana National Park), from 1981 to 1985. It reveals fascinating information on diverse behavior patterns of wild animals and on some human characters that lived in harmony with nature.
Lalith Seneviratne – the editor
Lalith completed his schooling at Ananda College and studied engineering at the universities of Kent, UK and Calgary, Canada respectively. He pursued a career in telecommunications, primarily with Motorola Corporation until 2001. Having implemented Sri Lanka’s first biomass or dendro village electrification system, he started and heads Lanka Gasifiers Pvt Ltd, a company that designs and manufactures small biomass gasifier generator systems. In addition, he does consulting work for renewable energy projects.
Lalith is a co – founder of the Ausrian Sri Lankan Elephant Research & Conservation Project under which support and guidance are provided for various small conservation projects. In recognition of his contribution to the Department of Wildlife Conservation he was made an Honorary Director in the department in 2004. Lalith and the author are friends who share common interests.
