A Hair Designer and a Gender Specialist – an unlikely duo – we met in 2011, through a mutual friend who knew we were both passionate about mountaineering. The following year, in 2012, we undertook our first expedition together to Island Peak (Imja Tse) in the Nepali Himalayas. This 3-week expedition gave us time to really get to know each other, and also learn that we worked well together as a team. En route to Island Peak, we spotted Mount Everest in the distance, and we told each other of our dream to climb it one day. The seed was then planted – to attempt the summit of Mount Everest together. This meant that over the next few years, we trained intensively together, and we got to know each other better, as it was important for both of us to feel that we could trust each other with our lives on an expedition such as this. In 2014, we climbed Mount Kilimanjaro together and thereafter, gradually worked towards realizing our shared dream and passion of climbing Mount Everest one day. To do it together was a given – our teamwork and skills complemented each other. The practical aspects of actually attempting to summit Mount Everest became the next logical challenge – this is that story.
