It is not known exactly when and where the concept of Customs of originated. Adam Smith, Commissioner of Customs, indicates in his famous work “Wealth of Nations” that Customs, denoting customary payments, has existed since time immemorial. Although Adam Smith is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential economists in world history, it does not seem to be so well known that he was a man from the Customs family. But was unable to say precisely when they were first introduced (Asakura, 2003)

G.A. Leslie Gamini obtained the LL. B degree from the Open University in 1993 and look oath as an Attorney – At- Law from the Sri Lanka Law College. He obtained the Post Graduate Diploma in Buddhist Studies from Kelaniya University in 1996 and the Master of art in Buddhist Studies from Kelaniya University in 1998. Also he obtained the Post Graduate Diploma in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Sri Jayawardenapura University in 2006 and the Master of Philosophy in Criminology from University of Sri Jayawardanapura in 2007. At present, he is reading for a PhD in Criminology at the University of Sri Jayawardanapura.

He Joined Sri Lanka Customs as an Assistant Superintendent of Customs Class 11 in 1976 and was later promoted to the posts of Asst. Superintendent of Customs Class 1 in 1981, Superintendent of Customs in 1991, Assistant Director of Customs in 1998, Deputy director of Customer in 2007, Director of Customs in 2011 and Additional director General of customer in 2016. 

He has Published several books on Customs and other related topics’ this book compiled by him seeks to cover areas such as Ancient Trade, Silk Road, Ancient Tax Systems and Customs History hitherto not touched by other writers including specialist historians.
