I first met Mr. Sirisaman Wijetunga at the Wijewardana Hall, Peradeniya University as fresh undergraduate in October 1965. After the university education, we worked in different fields and we met again in 1982 when he joined the Department of Archaeology. I would like to mention here with much honor that it was he who diverted my attention towards archaeology. Mr. Wijetunga has written over fifteen books on archaeology and our heritage.

In 1968, he was graduated from the Peradeniya University. In 2004, he obtained MSc – Vidyapathi (Research in Archaeology) from the Keleniya University. The name of his research book was ‘The Stone Inscription Communication in Sri Lanka. These days, he is preparing for his PhD.

He served in the Department of Archaeology for 21 years and retired as an assistant director of the Department. In 2005, he functioned as the media instructor of the Central Cultural Fund and in 2007 as the co-ordination secretary of the Ministry of National Heritage.

He used to write articles, poetry, short stories etc. since his childhood and he has composed lyrics for over 100 classical songs. One of these songs, ‘Sarasaviyedi ada witharai hamuwanne’ which was sung by Dr. Dayaratna Ranatunga became a very popular song.

Under the Indo – Lanka culture program, he got the opportunity of touring in seven states of India. In the same year, he was invited to deliver a lecture on ancient cultural relationships between Sri Lanka and Amarawathi and Nagarjunakonda sacred places in Andra Pradesh in India. He has also delivered more than 10 lectures on the field of archaeology in Sri Lanka too. He functions as a lecturer of Tourism Development Authority. He also functions as a member of the Advisory Council of the Department of Archaeology and also the secretary of the Prof. Senerath Paranawithana Foundation.
